ok, trying to get the best sound before eq, hyper c1000s aimed at15th fret and other pos. giving muddy sound, singing through th u87ai not too bad, but when playing both trax loses clarity
also any tip to minimize bleed

It sounds like you may have a phase issue. Sometimes moving the mics around will help. What happens is that by some stroke of luck you place the mics at just the right distance from each other to receive the sound out of phase from each other. This can be really hard to decipher by yourself. If you can get someone to play the guitar while you listen and move the mics it will be a lot easier.

Maybe try different mic techniques, ie: Mid Side, or XY, or aim one at the neck about 6 inches away, and place the other a few feet away to receive more of the room.

There are all types of mathematical formulas you may get from some of the gurus here explaining mic placement, and phase relation, but unless you eat physics for breakfast it will be a lot easier to just experiment.

Also don't be so uptight about getting great sound before EQ. Remember, the only rule is that it has to sound good - PERIOD. Who cares how you get there. [img]images/icons/smile.gif[/img]

I forgot to address the "bleed" question. The best fix is to overdub - not record vocals & guitar at same time (I'm assuming you're getting vocals on your gtr mics, and vice-versa). If that's not an option, use the gate on your plug-in rack. Set it so so the threshold lets in only the most direct sound - but remember you're probably going to lose some of your ambience because that's what it does - eliminate ambient sound. I'm guessing your talking about acoustic guitar. I have had the best results with 2 small diaphram condensors at a 90 angle from each other with the capsules (spelling?) about an inch away from each other. Try to get rid of the bass tones before you record, ie.. stay away from the sound hole, use highpass filters. If you think you have a phase problem load an digirack eq and push the phase button on one of the tracks, if the bass gets louder after pushing the button, you have a phase issue. Also I have had a lot of good results using a limiter before recording to get rid of the transient notes, that way you can get a hotter signal to the convertor. If you play anything like Ani Difranco or use a lot of dynamics, a limiter is almost neccessary imo.
