PT1 minimized in background, can't hear audio from media players or web??

So with PT1 open but MINIMIZED in the background, it seems to still hog my entire audio driver and doesn't allow me to play a reference track via a media player or to even play audio via Soundcloud or even YouTube.

Does anyone else have this problem? Is there a setting that allows me to play audio from anything OTHER than PT once it's open?

For instance, I'd really like to be able to watch YouTube tutorial videos with PT open in another screen. I'd also like to listen to reference tracks in MusicBee or WMP to check mixes. Being able to switch back-n-forth easily is pretty essential for efficiency.

Does this make sense? I've always been able to do this in Cubase. I'm on W7 x64 and my two interfaces are Tascam UH-7000 and EMU 1212m.

As I mentioned at the end of my post, I have tried both of my interfaces:

Tascam UH-7000
EMU-1212m

I'm using the proper ASIO drivers for the devices.

And you have this driver set as your MAIN playback device in Windows? Why not let your integrated sound card be the output for computer audio, and the interface be used for Pro Tools?

Thanks, but instead of that, I designated one interface for Windows and the other for PT1. I have to switch the input via the DSP mixer, but it's just a couple of clicks.

FWIW, the EMU Patchmix DSP mixer has separate Wave and ASIO channels to allow Windows to play while the DAW uses the ASIO. It still doesn't work with PT1 though, bcz it takes control of the ENTIRE EMU device
