Default 2009 Quad or 2009 8-Core Nehalem?

hi!

a friend of mine will buy a new mac pro for his HD3.

i read somewhere, that the 8-core has some problems with PTHD, where hyperthreading is the main problem.

so which is recommended?

thanks

Not sure about the hyperthreading but you might want to hold off the purchase if possible-The macpro is due a refresh right about now so you could either wait and get the bleeding edge of speed (obviously digi/avid blah blah blah will take their time to officially qualify it) or get a great deal on the older model

There's supposed to be an announcement from Apple about the Iphone 4.0 this Thursday. Many times when they announce updates to one product, they update a few others as well. Combined with the fact that the NAB convention starts next week, this is a very good time for them to announce new products (and considering the Mac Pros are updated about once a year, the last time being ... about 1 year ago).

he needs that machine now.

rumours say, it´s "by june", so that´s a long wait. besides that, the hexacore will cost more.

and while PTHD isn´t perfectly programmed for quad/octo by now, why go hexacore?

a plugin comparison quad vs. octo would be nice.

upgraded my HD6 from a G5 to a new 8 core 2.26 and magma chasis 2 months ago. ROCK SOLID with Snow leopard! Actually, I couldn't imagine ever needing more computer power for making records, between the RTAS power, 72 I/O channels and my 6 cards it is ridiculous...the 8 core base model is screaming fast.

The advantage to the 8 core is process strings and RAM. Don't get fooled by the higher speed of a quad. good luck!

I'm running a similar setup as above (HD 6), but with the 2.93 Quad...with same results...absolutely rock solid, never crashes, and haven't seen a single DSP shuffle since using this machine. Running latest PT version.

Ditto. See my setup info below. Rock solid and reliable.

attention!

i´m talking about the 2009 nehalem 8-cores! there are big differences between the 2008 harpertown and the 2009 nehalem in architecture.

some of you have the 2008 Harpertown, which i read somewhere, are more poweful/stable with PTHD than the Nehalem (at the moment)

as i wrote, a direct comparison of 2009 quad and 2009 8-core is the interesting part.
