If you'd read the entire post, you'd see that we're talking about DaveC scores on Laptops. DaveC scores on both platforms aren't anything to brag about, but at least we can use all of our inputs at once in the PC world!

Mungrin, what is playback perfomance like, how many plugins can you run at once?

I'm looking for a P4 laptop myself, I can't decide between the 3.06G Dell Inspiron 5150 or a Centrino based laptop

I was just about to buy the Toshiba Satellite P25 but I'm reconsidering as those davec scores seem kind of low to me for the money. I'm seriously considering a Compaq Presario 2100Z-ATHLON XP-M 2600+,512MB,30GB,DVD/CDRW for 1100.00. I already have a Compaq Presario 910-Athlon XP1500-1.3 that I got 24 tracks with 5.3.3 and 19 tracks with 6.1 using the MBox. I'm hoping the upgrade will get me 32 tracks. Also if anyone knows of any incompatibilities with this laptop please let me know.

That Davec test i recorded 27 tracks with 5 plugins on each. The Firewire drive had 3 partitions though so that may be why i got 27 instead of 32 tracks

coocooo...

I've looked at that athlon system as well. you can get it with just about every upgrade (sxga screen, 60 gig drive, wireless lan etc) for that price. there's supposedly a coupon code...although you enter the coupon when you enter the credit card so I couldn't test it. I did call compaq/hp and they confirmed it for me.

10% off one item SV7095 expires in a few days---2003-08-01 that will be about 120+ dollars off.

the problem with that system for me is that it's a 4200 rpm drive. I HATE slow drives. don't know how it affects pt, but just windows in general. 5400 rpm drives for laptops are rare and $$$ and I'm even scared to move down to 5400 from 7200.

also that compaq has an ali chipset which should work but whether it works well is questionable.

here's what I'm getting if I go athlon:

(anyone in the market for an amd laptop should check this out. alan might even agree!)

the notebook itself is made by prostar but being sold and configured here by this company

http://www.americancomputech.com/smo....asp?iid=88855

-it's up to an athlon xp-m 2500+
-you can get a 5400 rpm hard drive
-it's like the only one I've found with a via chipset
-you can get 333 ddr ram (most are only 266 incl compaq/hp)
-comes standard with the sxga higher resolution screen (it's an upgrade on most)
-it looks pretty thin (6.8 pounds---not too heavy)

prostar is not terrible, they are about .0 minutes from here so I'm going to try to go down there tommorow. if you can get around the name this one looks like it has all the features that we look for in desktops. well sort of anyway.

i change my mind every 5 minutes between this amd and the compaq centrino. for some reason in the centrino you can get a 5400 rpm, but in the athlon you cant. im trying to hold out for results of either but have not seen any as of yet because everyone has p4s...the notebook market is flooded with them.
