Default help!!! why no spdif input when selected in playback engine???

Ive noticed that switching the playback engine settings from 'ADAT' to 'SPDIF' uses less PCI resources. However , I can only get spdif in when ADAT is selected (& yes, Ive double checked my I/O settings)
Anyone know why selecting SPDIF doesn't allow spdif in??
PT5.1
OS9.1

thanks in advance
