Default footswitch question on digi 002R

I just recently purchased a footswitch, and assumed it would also start play back for recording, say if i'm at my drums tracking alone, and i want to just hit the switch and bam it plays. Well, all that happens when i press the switch is the record enable button flashes on the transport. Am i doing something wrong here, or is this just not possible? (starting and stopping, not just punching in and out)
