Default RECORDING 64 TRACKS MORE THAN 90 MIN.

I have a pro tools HD rig and am having difficulties recording longer than 90 min. I am needing to record 64 channels for 4 hours and it stops after 90 min...any thoughts? I am running off a dual 2gig G5 and have more than enough disk space/speed and memory.

Check in your preferences for "Open ended record allocation". I've recorded live projects for more than 90 minutes a number of times without problems.

Even with open ended record allocation selected...it gets me about 20 more min of record time~ Thanks for the suggestion.

Could be a memory issue. Make sure that you have loads of RAM (minimum 1 GB) and as much as possible allocated to Pro Tools.

I have done 48 tracks for 60 minutes and it does take lots of RAM. One problem is the waveform draws that does take tons of RAM a Session that big I would think over 2 GB RAM would be the main issue as well I am not sure of the sound file size limtiation in OSX.

How long would you like to record for?

As has been mentioned.. this'll depend on how much physical RAM you have, the sample rate and how many drives you have available for recording to.

Which version of PT and which OS?

I recently did a 50 track live recording of 2.5 hours (just over) using two firewire drives, (I DO NOT recommend trying this at home, but in my case there was no choice). The computer was a Dual 1.2 mdd with 1.5gig of RAM. No problems. I did however change all the buffer settings to their max values before I started.

Dear RCP

Off course you ARE aware of the limit one can set in ProTools preferrences to how many minutes you wan't to record. If it stop excalty after 90min this is were I would look?

This setting does NOT follow your session. So if somebody else is working on your rig you should check this before starting out.

I work for the National Danish Broadcasting Company, and we do a lot of HUGE setups. Recently I recorded 64 tracks, and had no problems selecting over 2 hours and then hit record. I can under NO CIRCUMSTANCE recommend recording open-ended. ALWAYS select a in and out. That way you KNOW, that you be ok. This applies only to big live-koncert recording off course.

What version of PT are you running?
I know that with 5.x.x the undo cache is stored in the PT application.
So you have to increase memory for that app.
Also, reguardless of OS9 or OSX version of PT, try reducing the number of undos to 1.
Find it in prefs. This will reduce the size of the undo cache.

Oh! and block veiw might help. No waveforms to draw.
