Urei 1176: Making a gear change
I've been using the same set up for many years for Voice Over recordings.
I currently have 2x Urei 1176 Rev H Silverface & 2x Urei 1176 Rev F Blackface. Lately I've been thinking of selling them and going with Neve Portico 2 Channel Strips. Instead of going in and out of pre amps to limiters and what not, just keeping it simple. Am I crazy? I'm not even sure what to ask for these things. They've been in my studio for over 20 years. |

Make sure you are happy with any new limiters before you let the Urei go or you may regret it. Classic studio gear...

Re: Urei 1176: Making a gear change
Smart thinking. I was planning on buying one and checking it out and seeing if it was worth the vintage purge.

Re: Urei 1176: Making a gear change
Definitely try before you buy! The 1176's have a distinct sound. Rupert Neve has made some of the best sounding gear ever, but, it will not be the same as your 1176s.

Re: Urei 1176: Making a gear change
+1 I relied on 1176's (or Purple's clones similar to your rev F's) for dialog control for many, many years (more than some of you have experienced). Only by the sanity of loudness specs have I finally unhooked that piece and rolled the last equipment rack from my mix room. BTW, no 1176 plugins I've tried (a few) are anything like the real thing. Nothing like. Not saying they are bad just a different thing.

In short i find some plugins work ok as a supplement to the hardware but not as a replacement. |

I would rather try to save up over time to get another option and keep the 1176's. |
