Welcome to the forum. So if I understand correctly you've been using it just fine with no problems, right? Try replacing the firewire cable with a new one. If that doesn't fix it, then chances are something has gone bad. Have you changed anything recently? What is in your setup?

Try another firewire device. if that one runs you may need to think about the possibility that you have a bad driver install or 003.

With Macs, sometimes you can fry the 003 firewire ports by hot patching(plugging in or unplugging while everything is powered on).

Correct me if I'm wrong, but I read that FW 800 doesn't have this issue because of the shape of it's connector. It's made to where you can't plug it in askew. I wonder if that's why Apple has abandoned FW400 on their computers.

You're right, the FW400 connector is an accident waiting to happen. If plugged in backwards, or even strained enough that it twists it will short out the power and data connections. The result is one or all of the following:

Death of firewire peripheral
Death of Computers firewire controller(this usually means time for a new motherboard, unless the firewire port is on a pci card)
Death of firewire cable.

I have a link to a really good article about this, but it's buried in a stack of backups from 5-6 years ago. But the article basically just says what I just said, only it's something like 3 pages long.

EDIT: Here's the link if you are interested:
