Default Audio quality loss on playback.

Not sure if anyone else experiences this but when I'm rehearsing my guitar for overdubs I get a sound dialed in but when I listen to the playback of what I've just recorded it sounds way duller than what I was rehearsing. My chain is- fender strat line in into steinberg 816interface, FireWire out to my computer and then USB into my passport hard drive. Plug in is amplibute 3. Then just today I plugged in an Alesis drum machine via USB, ran that through my BFD 2 plugin and found a great sound warming up but only to find my recorded tracks in ITB on playback also sounded dull. Can anyone explain this? This all is through PT 9 BTW.
