Default OS X 10.4.3 and Canopus ADVC-100

Just installed the new OS X 10.4.3 and can't get the Canopus to show or record any picture.

Has anybody else experienced this? Any suggestions what I could do to improve my situation?

Thanks,

Tim

Anyone out there using a Canopus ADVC-100 in connection with OS X 10.4.3 and Pro Tools?

I know this is not a Pro Tools related question, but there are quite a few users here who use Canopus, so if you could let me know whether it's a problem on our end or a driver (etc.) problem, that would be highly appreciated!

Cheers,
Tim

Mine seems to work fine; Canopus ADVC-100, ProTools HD3, 6.9.3, OS X 10.4.3, Powerbook 17" 1-gig, Magma 4-slot chassis, FW400 for video/Canopus, FW800 for audio.

found this a while ago on the logic TDM list.

"I _think_ what you need to do is unplug the Canopus, then run the latest QT
installer, restart and then plug the Canopus back in after it has finished
booting."

also:

"After reading you post I pulled out my ADC100 and tested it with
Final Cut Pro. I'm using Tiger 10.4.2 and it worked fine with the DV
NTSC codec, but not with the DV stream codec. Have you tried looking
into this?

Also, you might need to download the Pro Application Support update
for Tiger. This might help your situation, I'm not completely sure
but it won't hurt. You may need to download the updater from apples
site."

Thanks guys,

tried the QT install, as that used to be a problem before.

At least now I know, it's something on our end, so there has to be a solution.

I'll look into your suggestions.

All the best,

Tim

!!!WARNING!!!

Please be aware that most (if not all) ADVC100s should NEVER be hot plugged or unplugged from the computer's Firewire buss, unlike (unmounted) hard drives and most other FW peripherals. I know of at least two cases where G4's FW busses were permanently fried in this way. ADVC100s these days have big yellow warning stickers on them about just this issue. You MUST shut down the computer, the Canopus box and all other FW peripherals (just like a bad old SCSI buss) before connecting or disconnecting an ADVC100. Be careful!

Be sure follow the advice above... hot-pluggin my advc100 burned out mny last IEEE1394 on my G4... and fried the converter too... I'm using their newer version the advc110 which is completely bus-powered and solved this problem...

runs fine with FCP and with PT with video in the timeline

With the model 100 there is a big warning in the manual - only use the supplied firewire cable, and the front port. DO NOT USE the more inviting, more standard rear port - as that is where the lethal voltages are (lethal for your firewire buss, that is)

I have been told that if you use a powered, buffered firewire hub, you are extra safe from any 'lethal' voltages...... regardless of what port you use.

Also - the Canopus 'pollutes' the firewire buss - so dont chain it anywhere near an actual drive. One more reason to own a powered hub. I use a $42 Belkin from amazon.com - works great with my ADVC-100

Thanks for all the input.

For all those that have the same problem. This is how I solved it:

Shut down the mac. Unplug the firewire cable, as well as the power plug of the computer. Plug in the computer plug, boot the mac and when everything is running, connect the firewire cable again.

Working perfectly again now. Phew!

Maybe you missed my previous post. As long as an ADVC100 is involved, you should NEVER hot plug ANYTHING on your Firewire buss as suggested in the quoted text above. You may get away with it several times before you fry it and your computer's FW circuit, but eventually, fry them you will. SHUT THE COMPUTER AND ALL PERIPHERALS DOWN BEFORE PLUGGING/UNPLUGGING ANY FIREWIRE DEVICE ON A CHAIN THAT INCLUDES A CANOPUS ADVC100.

Another poster mentions that a FW hub can serve as a sort of a "safety buffer" under the circumstances, and/or that the front port (which only exists on G5s) is safe, but unless this is expressly documented by Canopus I would be very skeptical. Again, the rule can sometimes be violated without incident, but it's playing with fire (pun intended). Don't do it!
