Re: First experience with NVMe M.2 in enclosure - bad.
The sleep problem is not a big PITB - to sleep, I turn off the new wiz bang Apple keyboard and put the machine to sleep. It wakes up in around ten minutes and then I sleep it again - and that usually sticks

I use one for Pro Tools sessions - split between two NVMes as JBOD and the other is Raid 0 for virtual instruments. Both work well. Our sessions here aren't huge - although we've had a few 100+ track sessions. The ONLY weirdness I have is some plugins. And no weirdness compares with the crippling time lost and reboots with the cheese grater. The fan noise only seems to show up when I'm shutting down. We record a lot of vocals in the room here just a few feet from the Mac Studio and Echo Duals. All together they are way quieter than the old 2012 cheese graters and spinning drives. Michael Brauer mixes most of our music and loves the sound etc. I would say in the real world it's all extremely quiet and works great. Sometimes the Echo Duals will light up when the system is sleeping. I'll contact Sonnet about that sometime - but they don't feel hot and everything seems to be working so I'm happy. You have to take everything I say with the grain of salt that my last machine (actually two including Vienna Ensemble Pro '08 Mac Pro server) had stage 5 brain collapse. I swoon with happiness with my current setup.

Re: First experience with NVMe M.2 in enclosure - bad.
I got the Sabrent Rocket XTRM-Q 2TB USB 3.2 / Thunderbolt 3 External SSD last year. I connected it to my Dell dock via TB3 port (Dell Win10 laptop, PT Ultimate/MTRX Studio/HDXx1). I store all my sessions there. No issues whatsoever (knock on wood). Transfer rate is superb. The Sabrent enclosure does get warm from time-to-time.

They have confirmed that one should expect 1,500MB/S from each drive and my understanding is that the disconnect dialog messages on wake, which only affect Macs, can be ignored. The drive(s) apparently do disconnect (after flushing the cache) in order to save power during sleep, however should then reliably re-mount when the Mac awakes, with no risk of data loss. This doesn’t quite match with your experience, so I wonder if anything else in the Thunderbolt chain might be affecting trying to get your Mac to sleep, or why your Sonnet dock appears to wake randomly when the wider system is ‘asleep’. FWIW, I’ve also been ‘researching’ NVMe drives and Sonnet support confirmed that the Samsung 980 Pro and WD_Black SN850 that I’m considering are fully compatible. However, when looking at other Thunderbolt enclosures, I have come across some apparent issues with the 970 Evo Plus that you’re using. Sonnet publish a compatibility chart - https://www.sonnettech.com/support/d...patibility.pdf … which suggests that 970 Evo Plus drives that shipped prior to 2020 require a firmware update to be compatible with MacOS … just in case this information is useful for when you contact Sonnet :) Last edited by Righty27; 08-14-2022 at 01:29 PM. |

Re: First experience with NVMe M.2 in enclosure - bad.
That would be a PCIe card with slots for 2,5" SSDs, I think. The main topic in this thread is NVMe cards in external Thunderbolt 3 encosure, with much higher transfer speeds than that. Sorry, I should have been clearer on the Thunderbolt 3 part in the title.

I think he is talking about the Samsung 970 Evo (maybe Evo Plus) M.2 drives on a Syba card... one of the switch based cards I've been recommending.

Re: First experience with NVMe M.2 in enclosure - bad.
I suspect the culprit might be on the USB2 chain. Apparently Monterey is not a big fan of USB 2 and can cause troubles. Occasionally thumb drive authorization keys drop out and I have to reseat them. And I currently have 24TB of backup on the system - which is foolish but I haven't had time to set up my backup server in the back room. I've been in the middle of a project that will pause on the 19th - and hopefully I can dig a little deeper then - update from PT 2021.12 and see what comes.
Andy at Sonnet recommended the 970 Evo Plus. I suspect they're working fine. I'm not sure when they shipped! That could be another zit I'll research after the 19th - depending on the outcome of other hopeful fixes. Why do you leave your stuff on all the time? I used to do that but power outages here (an island off the left coast of Canada) and electric bills encouraged me to sleep or shut down. THanks!!! Quote:
