Default Mic preamp in digi002

Hi,
is it me or the mic preamp in digi002 are kind of weak?

I have a good AKG mic. put on the 48v select the mic input.. did everything good.. I got a signal that i can work with put it seem that i have to put the gain almost at the max to have a good input.

Whats the opinion on the board? Is it a good? ok? go buy a good mic preamp? situation...

A+

I never use them except for Guitar Cab stuff. Sometimes on Snare, but other than that, I do not use them...

002 preamps sound fine to me. Like any preamp, depending on the mic and the source, you may need to open the gain nearly all the way. But it's got 65db of gain, so it's not a weak, low gain preamp.

Be sure you don't have a pad engaged on your microphone.

also try with a few different cables, or go into the gain setting in one of the top windows(i forget which) to see if any have been somehow toggled.

Gain setting in PTLE is not applicable on the 002 and 002 Rack.

This would be my first suspicion as well. Although I have several outboard preamps including two rather expensive ones (over 1 thousand dollars each) and do the bulk of my tracking with those through an Apogee Rosetta, I really have no reservations about using the 002 mic preamps. I use them for room mics all the time, and sometimes when I'm going somewhere just to record a few tracks from somebody overdub style I use them for that as well -- so I can avoid bringing along and hooking up extra gear. Just a Powerbook and the 002. To be sure, they don't sound quite as good as the outboard stuff, but the difference is not huge and I find the quality quite acceptable.
