Default is there a way to mute the monitors in pro tools?

hey all

this may be a dumb question but...

i was wondering if there was a way to mute my speakers during recording without having to turn each of them off.
is there something in pro tools that can do this or something i can buy?

i don't have a seperate room for vocals so every time someone does a vocal track i have to turn off the speakers so it doesnt bleed through.

thanks

cheers

Most mini and small format mixers have both a headphone and separate monitor/main output w/volume control, which would do what you need and can be helpful in lots of other ways as well.

I simply use 2 headphones when recording vocals. I just use a stereo split adapter from the 002R so that both the vocalist and I can monitor what's going on. Simple and effective.

hey

yes, i also use 2 headphones. but its rather annoying to always have to get up and switch each monitor on if we want to hear just one line or a take through the monitors. you know what i mean?

i don't use a mixer other than the one in pro tools.

i'm simply using an mbox with 2 monitors plugged into it.

would it be safe to assume that if there was something that turned off the monitors that it would also turn off the headphones as well since they are both running into the mbox?

for some reason i'm starting to believe that i can't possibly do what i want to do. heh.

If you have the $$$$ (300?)..... I highly recommend the Mackie Big Knob.

It has made a big difference in my workflow. multi ins and outs, muting, mono, plus more.

There is nothing you can do within the software that would affect your speakers and not your headphones, you definitely would need some sort of external hardware. If you had an 002 or something with more outputs you could do some interesting bussing to alternate outputs, but with an Mbox, the exact same signal is present at the main outputs and the headphone jacks.

Mackie Big Knob, Presonus Central Station or Samson C-Control.

I plan on getting a soundcraft compact 10 mixer soon. It would do the trick for about $180 or they have a 4 channel version for $99. Just something to check out.
