Default PENCIL TOOL FOR DRAWING VOLUME DIPS

There is a recent post about guitar string noise from sliding left hand up and down neck. I am having the same problem. How does the pencil tool work? Like what mode to you have to be in, shuffle, slip, etc. Also do you have to look at the track in volume view. I never used this tool and would like to get some advice on how to decrease this annoying noise. Any help would be appreciated.
