Default OT:Sample rate conversion question.

I need to convert the sample rate of a CD's worth of basic tracks. The basic tracking sessions were recorded at 96KHz. I need to bring them down to 48KHz or 44.1KHz so the artist can do overdubs on her system.
My Question: Should I convert to 48KHz or 44.1KHz at this point? I had read that bringing files down from 96KHz to 48KHz will sound better for overdubbing and mixing. The conversion to 44.1KHz should be done at mastering.
Is this right?
Thanks,
Mark

If everything else is equal... yes.

I'm sure someone will be along in a second to argue the point. But that's my opinion.

Sample rate conversions by nature introduce error. Some algorithms have linear phase and low passband ripple. Others can introduce more egregious artifacts that aren't conspicuously heard.

If you have to SRC, there's no reason why you can't go straight to the final sample rate. Mixing at 48 over 44.1 has absolutely no improvement in today's oversampling environment.

Dan Lavry's white papers make for good reading. See the support page. http://www.lavryengineering.com/
