Default Varispeed problem

I can't varispeed anything above zero. I can go 3 semitones down but not up.
If I go above zero, I get weird digital clocking noise. Below zero is fine.
This is new. In the past few months.

I was running HD Driver from 2023.3. I've tried re-installing the HD Driver from 2020.12, I've tried running ProTools back to 2023.3 (when I definitely know it was working). Nothing seems to work.

Tried re-seating Loop-sync cables.

I'm now on 2024.3 with HD Driver 2020.12. Same thing. Anybody seen this?

Thanks

Vince

I'm confused what you mean since the Varispeed algorithm offers no user definable pitch control. It is determined by how much stretching is performed. Am I missing something?

I assume you're using your Sync HD to do this.

Yes I'm using the Sync HD to do this. I've done it for years. It's just giving me weird aliasing noise in the last couple ProTools versions.

Just wondering if anyone else has seen this.

Well if you're convinced that you've configured everything correctly then I would suspect hardware failure. Can you borrow or swap out your Sync/Interface to troubleshoot the failure point ? Or get a tech to diagnose the units?

Hi there,

I never need VSO but out of curiosity I just tried it with the below setup and it worked fine. No glitches or artefacts. 24.3 and 24.3 HD driver installed. Tried all the way down and up and no clicks or anything.

In session setup:
Clockmaster set to sync HD
Clock reference set to internal / VSO

Thanks Frank,

I wonder if my Sync HD is acting up since it just started happening in the past few weeks. I do have someone who has a Sync HD I could borrow to test.

I tried to varispeed up to pitch ProTools to match an accordion that wasn’t in tune with the track. That’s when I noticed it.

Of course I could fix it later but …

Yeah, I hope you can find a fix. This was literally the first time I've tried VSO since I started on PT4.
I work in post so I never need it. But I'm glad that it works in case I do.

Frank.

Well I work in both Post and music (and music for post). Normally I just have the Sync HD locked to house sync, but for music work I still use the varispeed the way I used to on analog multitrack.

I've re-seated all the cables today. Don't know why anything would have changed, nothing has moved in the machine room for a while.

If that doesn't work I'll try to grab my buddies Sync HD and see what happens.

Thanks for the help.

Vince

I *thought* there was somebody else with Sync/Sync HD reported varispeed problems on DUC (in the last ~year?) but I searched DUC and can't find it.

My only naive question is does Digitest flag any problems? If you swap Sync HD boxes maybe also try simplifying the system, one HDX card, one interface box, on Digilink cable, try different clock cables, check they are digital/video cables, etc.
