7200rpm macbook drive recommendations?
Looking to upgrade the 160g drive in my white macbook. It's mostly for storage reasons but I figured I should consider getting a 7200rpm drive for those times when I need to record/mix from the internal drive. I'm concerned about additional noise from the faster speed of the drive. Anyone have any experience they can share with me?
Thanks, Will

You won't benefit from a faster internal for Pro Tools, it will still screw things up in the end. An external FW is the way to go, there are a few bus powered ones out there which will help keep size down for a mobile rig. I have the Lacie little disk and an owc on the go, both good drives.

I bought this one, single platter..low power usage and 7200 SATAII Drive. Then took out the old one and put it in my ps3 I noticed a faster boot and access times as well as faster file transfer. The 5400 stock drive is really not that bad..but not that fast either..depends on what you want it for. If it's more space..then you can't go wrong with the one I linked at the top for the money. As far as PT's goes..never tried to track to it..although I do bounce my mixdown to a mastering folder on my desktop so that my OWC drive can focus on one thing and my internal record the result(don't get occasional errors anymore that way). Then use Peak LE to master from the internal drive. Hope this helps...I've had this drive for some time now and it has served me well. Expect a little vibration from a faster drive if it's a Macbook. |

I think you will see some performance improvement. Not necessarily with PT itself, but overall, I think the computer will just run better. I'm in the market for MBP internal drive myself for this very reason. Ok...I'm off my soap box now. =)

Re: 7200rpm macbook drive recommendations?
Assumptions on message boards are fun. Yes, I have a pair of external drives I record to. And four others I back up to. For whatever reasons, I record to the internal drive occasionally (btw, a totally error free experience thus far... even recording 10 tracks with a tiny buffer).
I use my macbook for all of my computing. I'm often out of room (music library, kid videos...) and wouldn't mind seeing a speed up. What I don't want is a drive that spins so loud that it picks up when I'm recording or vibrates the keyboard constantly. Numi, thanks for the link. Anyone else have any thoughts?
