Set up for ADR
Hey there.
I'm about to record my first ADR/Looping session for a student film. I have video feeding into the vocal booth as well as audio from Pro Tools into booth, etc. The movie is cut, it's a 5 minute deal, four different actors. How should I set up my tracks? How do I set up the 3 beep count in? Is it 3 seconds, then record, or start recording on the 3rd beep? Loop record and give them the complete line right before their line, correct? Sorry if this sounds really silly, but I have to ask and I know that there are some very knowledgeable people on this site!!! Thanks in advance to anyone that is willing to help me out. Maybe I can return the favor! peace, Tony J. |

Re: Set up for ADR
Are you using the old conventional way of film loop playback? or the newer system of digitized video playback?
Here we use DOREMI labs V1 for playback so the machine control chase is almost instantaneous. what i do is create a 4 rhythmic beeps with the last beep muted, I do (apple+,) on the start of the 4th beep so i can snap it on the start of the dialogue to be dubbed. note: the 4th beep is just for visual cue. Then I highlight that segment including the beeps and put a MARK SELECTION on it and ID the segment properly. (like lara croft seq1 loop1) I usually tape over my previous take (not overwrite) so that i dont create a mess on my playlist. on editing i can always apple+click on the region i need to "choose the best take" and just select the what i need to playback. WORKS very solid. We follow a certain format when we ID our tracks so that everyone can understand if they are playing the right track or not. (be organize) Our junior/apprentice Dubbing Engineers keeps a log of everything, artist, character, seq number, loop number, take number. We record as pure as we can. so for really critical actors with really crucial lines.... we pop in two identical microphones with different gain. so whispered and shouts can be done by the artist with one take without having too much compression or extremely low audio level. so on my playlist i typically have a track for beeps, a track for guide (shooting sound) and the recording tracks which depends on how many microphone i will use. I might be missing alot of details so just ask if you need to know more. regards, JS |
