Default HD I/O 16 x 16 analog and 192 question.

Hey,

I have a HD2 pcie setup and currently am running an avid hd i/o 16 x 16 analog from primary port using the digilink adapter to the core card. Then got the 192 plugged in with the old digilink cable from primary on 192 to my accell card. They are both hooked up to the big ben and are set to clock externally, all is good there both interfaces lock in. But when I use my 192 I get pops and crackles on the inputs and outputs. I was told that I have my setup wrong and it should go hd i/o primary -> core card then expansion slot from hd i/o to 192 primary port. Is this the correct way to set this up?

Thanks in advance,
Eric

Latter is best for maximum I/O density but former should work w/o a problem
The 192 is not locking to the WC from the Big Ben correctly by the sound of it
Try connecting the Loop Clock cables between the HD and the 192

A little confused because if you take a peek at the apogee big ben manual it states:

"Send a separate W/C Out of
the Big Ben to the W/C In on
each interface. Once again,
Do NOT use Loop Sync!"

Also, I popped off the lid on the 192 and pulled out each card to inspect for any blown circuitry just out of curiosity and found this on the bottom of the first A/D card. Could this possibly be causing the pops/clicks. Not sure if it could possibly be related.

I know what Apogee says but I also know what Digi/Avid hardware likes.
It likes Loop Sync

That cap doesn't look good but I would think it would only avvect one channel or channel pair not the whole box. But there may be something wrong on the main board in the 192 as well.
How is it if it is by it's self on the first card internally clocked?

So I should have it synced to the big ben as I normally do (sending BNC out of BB to WC IN on hd and 192) and also add a loop sync from HD to 192 as well? I can try that tomorrow along with trying the 192 just internally clocked and plugged into core card alone and I will post results here tomorrow. Thanks for the continued help, I really appreciate it!

I would think you loop sync all Avid/Digidesign interfaces together and only have one connection between Apogee and the interfaces, as in WC out Apogee to ext.clock in the first interface. Then set that interface to accept ext.clock which is fed to it by Apogee's.

Hey,

So I went back to the studio and hooked up loop sync between the HD and the 192, and set the HD to look for ext. clock from big ben. Everything seems to be working like a charm now! Thank you guys for your help! The 192 now does not sync to ext. it says loop now. No more crackle and pops!

that Cap that burned will have absolutely nothing to do with your static noise… it is a DC decoupling cap for the opamp
you called me the other day was it useful info ?

feel free to call me again and ill explain why what did will work but not solve your initial problem for the reasons below

IF YOU HAVE LOOP SYNC HOOKED UP ?
and then also have external sync hooked up Loop sync will override the external sync every time

As I mentioned during our conversation it is one or the other

this is clear in the user manual as well

Ill bet that if you 75Ω terminate the external sync and remove the loop sync it will resolve this issue
get some BNC "T" connectors and some 75Ω terminators and attach them at the ext sync input BNC it should work fine,
Apogee signal is quite often over the 5v p/p that is acceptable for the Word sync in
( even though the big ben incites a termination it needs to at the input BNC as the level is over the 5v p/p threshold )
