Default sliding tracks (single and multiple)... how the heck?

often, because I'm one of the players, there's a bit of "excess" at the beginning of a session, which at some point I want to eliminate

I used to be able to highlight the "hand"icon and just drag the trak... now I get a dialog window which forces me to punch in 0:00:00 and OK in order to slide the track...

is there a way to turn this off (unless needed)

and is there a way to move all the tracks to o:00:00 if needed, rather than one at a time

I've tried holding down shift and selecting a number of tracks.... which almost works (I'll get all but one) or the session starts to play....

this is not nudging, but moving "wholesale" tracks back to 0:00:00 to cut out the excess dead air

There are a few ways of dealing with this. First, you could drop a marker at the actual start of music and use the locate function to return there, instead of to time 0:00:00. Or, you could create a group of everything by holding the modifier and selecting all the tracks, then Ctrl-g to bring up the groups dialog window. Then with the ALL group enabled, dragging any track should drag all the tracks at once. If you're not using markers(locate points) you are missing out on a great convenience feature.

Another option that comes to mind is to "Cut Time." See page 698 of the PT 8 Reference Guide.

Sounds like you have yourself in Spot mode. Your different edit modes are at the top left of the screen (SLIP, SHUFFLE, SPOT, GRID). Spot forces you to manually enter where you want to move your region when you grab it.
