I wonder if digi2000 tried to recover his wiped files with something like Ontrack Easy Recovery Pro?

I know if you send your HD to Ontrack it can cost up to $10,000 to have them do the recovery... ouch.

I would hope that one persons misfortune was at least helpful to others who will now back up, get insurance and make sure they have a good security system.

Although I had my own little experience about burglars this story was part of the motivation to get me insurance.

Besides, in the run-up to the contracting it requires you to count through your stuff and calculate its value.
Have you counted through your rig lately? If not, it might surprise you what you collected one by one through the times. Imagine someone walking in to drag it all away and how far you could possibly be from replacing it.
It´s definitly better two shell out those ~ 100-200$ per year or so and have some safety.
