Default 12.8.1 - Panning Bug on my System

http://protools.ideascale.com/a/idea-v2/280449

Sierra, PT 12.8.1 HDX

Panning automation erroneously GLIDES depending on entry method.

Steps to re-create:

•In a new session, create a mono track. Instanciate Signal generator; pink noise suggested.
• Using only mouse and the normal pointer tool, draw automation that hard cuts from left to right (say every whole note on the grid). This will play back the automation properly as expected.
• Delete the automation and re-create, but this time, use the trimmer tool to create the automation (that hard pans every whole note).

On my system, this will play back incorrectly. The automation will not hard cut as drawn, but will glide to the point over the course of the bar. Totally odd!

Even stranger, if I use the regular pointer tool to manually move each dot and then put them back again, the automation will now playback properly.

My deduction is that there is some type of bug when the automation is created using the trimmer.

I sure would appreciate it if anyone else could verify this bug! Thanks!

I've seen something similar on vanilla, when I highlight a section and use the trim tool to change the volume or any other automation parameter for a few bars it will gradually return to the original position instead of following the lead. If I readjust the points manually with the pointer it works as intended.

I'm yet to check if this is happening on 12.8.1 because I have been recording all my automation in real time with latch since I first came across this a few versions back.

Can you confirm if this started for you in 12.8.1? Haven't been able to repro here (though running Pro Tools HD 12.8.1 on Mac Mini or Eleven Rack if that's a factor). Will start a support case to get example sessions from you.

Pretty sure this could be the same old "Pan bug" that's been hanging around for years, where if the track is in Ticks the pan automation just doesn't follow correctly. I've just experienced it in 12.8.1 OSX10.11.6 HDX2. For me the solution is just to change the track from Ticks to Samples. Its a serious buzz kill when you don't know if your mix is going to behave as it should or not, especially when you need to work in Ticks for whatever reason.

Thanks for providing the sessions and more info. Passed on to Engineering, logged and created support cases.

I told them about this years ago. They don't care to fix it. Very annoying.

FYI I have the same issue in PT HD 12.8.0. My workaround is to add breakpoints just barely inside the breakpoints created with the Trimmer tool.
