Default Digi 002 configuration when using an ext. preamp??

Hi, I'm using the Digi 002 control surface and I just picked up a new preamp. How am I supposed to hook my microphone to the preamp without using Digi 002 preamp's??
In other words, how do I avoid not using two preamps since Digi 002 XLR inputs go through their mic pres??

What kind of preamp do you have?
But on the front of the 002 you can choose whether or not your input is Mic or Instrument. If it's on the Intrument setting, this will bypass the pre-amp.

You just have to use the jack-inputs.

This is not the case. You should use inputs 4-8 for the preamp. Even the line in goes thru the preamp on inputs 1-4 as can be seen by being able to use the volume pots on those inputs.

I have a Great River ME-1NV.
So what you're saying is to not even use the first four mic inputs at all? (XLR or Line in)
But rather use the other inputs?

you want to do what cliff boy said and plug the output of your pre into any of the 002's 1/4 analog inputs 5-8. dont plug into the 002's pres at all. so you have a total of 6 pres now.

ps-your best bet is to buy or make a cable that is female xlr to 1/4 male so you can go out of the pre's +4 xlr output. the reason is cause with the great river, the switches on the front panel(loading, and phase)are wired to the great rivers xlr output only, not the 1/4 inch -10 output jack. so if you are only using the great river's -10 1/4 outputs, the loading and phase features will be unavailable to you.

Interesting. So every mixer with trim-pots routes its line-ins through the mic-pres ?
Excuse me, but this is nonsense.

I don't think he's saying every mixer. But the 002 does not have separate line and mic amplifiers. And, unless you spend alot of money, most mixers are the same. The line and mic inputs both use the same preamp.

OK. Next time i change my rack, i´ll open my 002r and have a look .
Anyway, the best way to connect a decent mic-pre is, first into a decent converter and then into the sp/dif in of the 002 (with external clock, of course).

Hey Johnny,

Even though I dont own any Digi just yet. Once again, You can carry out a simple check to see whether or not the pres are bypassed for the sake of argument but pluggin you mic into your Great River, Then from the GR, go into the XLRs on the digi, Makin sure the gain controls are fully down. If you get a signal into protools, You'll know the pres have been bypassed. If you have to increase the gain on the 002 pres in order to get something, They arent bypassed.

Give it a try

I wish my stuff would hurry up and get here!!
