iMac G5 question
Would I have a big loss in performance if I purchased an iBook G4 1ghz,
instead of the new iMac G5 1.6ghz? The new iMac G5 is not Digidesign tested yet so I'm a little hesitant to buy it. Any help is appreciated. thanks newbie |

Re: iMac G5 question
thanks for the response
Some people have told me i'll be fine with the ibook for what i need to do (basic instrument tracking, some vocals, tracking out sequences from the Triton), but the price is so close between the iMac G5 and iBook G4. I might just wait until Digi tests the iMac G5, then buy. I'm ready to start getting busy though. |

Re: iMac G5 question
My iMac was bought with pt in mind and it's not letting me down. I have yet to max it out so I don't know what it'll do yet (2 weeks old) but it screams over my g3 ibook. The ibook scored 45 on xbench. A maxed out tibook scored 75 and my iMac scored 120 with 1.25g ram.

Re: iMac G5 question
My PowerBook G4 (15" 1.5Ghz 512M RAM) Xbench results, with Energy Saver settings:
Automatic: 103.94 Highest: 126.7 I find it quite easy to max this out running ProTools and/or Reason.

Re: iMac G5 question
iMac runs Pro Tools like a dream here. xBench score of 157. Well over the score of 90 on my TiBook 867. No crashes or errors (yet).

Re: iMac G5 question
I too am thinking of ditching the G4 in favour of a G5 iMac. Just how quiet are they?

Re: iMac G5 question
I have been a PC guy and the track count based on the faster PC's deliver tremendous track counts. However, I've recently grown tired of the PC BS I've encountered and went down to the "Apple Store" and discovered the new IMac G5's. What kind of track count can it generate? I'm just looking at doing home music, but have been looking for PT to deliver a reasonable amount of midi functionality. I understand that it's on the way with the next release. Can I do 32 tracks with a few soft synths and FX on a G5 iMac or do I really need to consider the full blown G5? Do I still have to pay a billion dollars for plugins or does the VST-RTAS convertors I've read about deliver affordable plugins to PTLE?
