Well the two are very different units. The Avalon is a mono mic pream/channel strip with compressor and eq. The Fatso has no mic pre, is stereo, and has no eq or variable compressor of the traditional type. You'd need to link two Avalons to use as a bus compressor, and--as one who's used the Avalon for over three years--I think you'll be very disappointed with it in that role (at least the 737 that is, I can't speak to other Avalon units). The only other option I was considering versus the FATSO was the API 2500.

Can the Fatso create that "Fat", "Round" bottom end that analogue is so famous for?

Cheers,
Boogie

the avalon 747 is a great stereo compressor/eq. It saved a lot of my tracks... works great eather as a summe-compressor to enhance small sounding mixes or as a special fx tool for heavey compression on loops, drums etc. the EQ is incredible, first it seems to be strange, but after you tried it you cant imagine working without it anymore. another great feature: you can do a 10db boost of the input by pressing a single button. its easy to make the decision between soft or extreme use this way. very cool: You can switch between tube and solidstate signal path with a single button. the levels stay exactly the same. no tube/solidstate fakes anymore! you can really here the difference- and you will be surprised how offen you will choose solid state... I highly recommend this piece of gear, but cant say anything about the fatso

"Can the Fatso create that "Fat", "Round" bottom end that analogue is so famous for?"

By tameing the annoying HF scratchyness of some signals - yes.

My bad, I saw 747 and thought 737. I was talking about the wrong piece

Hi Jules,

I was wondering, where in your recording chain are you putting the FATSO. At the end, to simulate going to tape, after the micpre to act as a compressor, or elsewhere?

Thanks,
--wolfie
