Didn't realize the JoeMeek had digital output.. Yeah using the spdif or optical might sound better if the converters in the JM are better than the digi.. Spdif might be better because then your optical input is still open for 8 more channels if needed..

I read about a guy in Gearslutz that bought a $3500 POWER cable for his monitor amp..

I'm sure you could find a spdif cable out there for at least a couple grand ..

I may be way late on this post but, getting a better pre and still going through the mini's pre will only degrade the improvement you made with your pre upgrade. If you get a better pre with a spdif out and go into the mini's spdif in, like a apogee mini me, you will see a noticable difference. If you couple that with a a good A/D conveter like an apogee mini dac connected to your spdif out, your sound will really improve.

You could try a tube mic to warm things up. I have been very happy with the MXL V69 Mogami edition for $299 new and one of my local shops has a used one for $199 that looks like new.
