Does the monthly subscription model still need an iLok?
Just wondering..if it doesn't, & authorises the machine directly, that could be the one good thing about it for location recording

yeah you still need it. one day i hope they phase it out though, like they did with media composer. and like waves did with their plugins, dongle is old school. just like when they used to not have offline bounce, that stuff is old, i can see them ditching it in the next 2 upgrades or so

yep. in the ilok manager you will see the description and it says something like "TYPE: Subscription (1 month)" something along those lines.

Since there is a small limit on licenses on an iLok, does it use the same slot or a new one if you buy successive rentals?

You choose what licenses go from the ILM on your computer to your Ilok. When you are done with or not using, you transfer it off your Ilok.
