How far down the ladder are you guys going for a video card?

Are there any to stay away from?

Is a 3850 good enough to run PTle?

My machine is for PT only for the most part.

I do run wavelab sometimes.

No internet or anything else.

Until this i7 build. Sorry your having such hastles. Hang in,,, and don't give up,,,, it will pay off,,, just finding that needle in the haystack!?! Mike
Thanks Mike for the encouraging words man; U almost mad me T.O.(thatz my quarterback)

But yeah I'm trying to pinpoint it... I just RMA'd the PSU I got & will try 1 more & if that doesn't get it then the MOBO will get the next RMA on'eim... I've went thru it so much I saw MOBO all in my sleep

& too Steve & Mykhal have been too great with help & even just checking up so I'm kool, not really upset but of course it's frustrating though but I have a good rig already, which will be my 2nd rig once the i7 is running for me... Maybe I should call Black Lion Audio & see if they can mod the i7 or som'n to get it runnin

(if u don't know me by now, u won't get it)

Well, I did it.

I pulled the trigger on a bunch of parts to put me an i7 together.

Should be here in a couple of days.

I'll report on the progress.

Wish me luck.

Me, too, the parts should be here in the next day or two. Godspeed to both of us.

I could really use some pointers on BIOS settings, OS install, video card drivers, etc. There seem to be a lot of tips in this thread that say things like "don't use the motherboard install disk" or "don't install the graphics card program suite" or "you should have used AHCI but that can't be done now that Windows is installed."

I'm not thinking about overclocking, just the best performance using standard clocks.

My board will be the Gigabyte GA-EX58-UD3R with a 920 CPU.

Anybody got time to write a quick primer on BIOS settings and initial OS/driver install?

In the BIOS the only changes I made were to the RAM speed ( can't remember the name, I 'll look it up at the studio later). I also disabled the LAN. I have run with HT on and Off and it makes no difference in stability. I also disabled RAID.

Other than that, she's all stock. And solid as a M***F** rock!

been following this thread for a few weeks now -

just built my third DAW yesterday and testing today - pretty cool !
the last two were based on P4 3GHz so a couple of years old now.

specs:

i7 Quad Processor i7-920
Corsair Dominator DHX+ DDR3 1600MHz 3GB
Asus P6T, X58, Socket-1366
Western Digital Caviar Black 500GB
NEC DVD±RW burner AD-7200S, 20x, SATA
Gainward Radeon HD 4830 512MB GDDR3
003R PT 8

no major issues in setting up all good -whatever i throw at it the cpu stays below 50% and can just handle everything, wish i had a HD camera to see what its capable of for rendering -

Am curious, does the i7 system take away the need for a UAD-2 for RTAS plugins ? as I have never used a UAD card just curious as I was looking into buying one before I built this instead. Happy days..

Does someone please have the patience to talk a simpleton like me through overclocking my GA-EX58-UD3R / i7 920 combination?

I've tried to read the literature, but it seriously makes my head hurt. I can build a PC in my sleep, but this stuff is way over my head.
However I think some step by step do this, now do that instructions will help it sink in.

Anyone? Please......

All the way down to a $37 MSI GeForce 7300LE 256. Its running just fine pushing a pair of 22" LCD's at 1680x1050.

I guess it depends on what plugins you really need. I don't feel the need for more power and am just fine with Native plugins. I will upgrade to HD long before I go for UAD.

get me your ram specs, and get a temp monitoring program like core temp and get your operating temps before oc'ing at idle and at a good mixing load.

also i or anyone else who helps you cannot be responsible for system melting!!! so hopefully you have some good cooling going on cause it gets HOT.
