The 2 things you'll need to do to make it work better for audio production is probably getting that second hard drive, and getting one of the certified express cards with the TI chipset. I think the express card slot had to be the hardest thing to find out of all the requirements I had for it, and none of the companies I spoke to were helpful at all with locating laptops with those slots, so I figured I'd chime in and save you potentially days of research.
Solid advice. I'll be getting the Lenovo soon (by the end of 2011), and may ask you for help with the bios tweaks at that time.

thanks
I use two setups. Just for quick stuff I have a MBox 3 on USB

For my larger recordings in the field I have a Motu 828Mk3 Fire-wire with two Motu 8 Pre's running into it for 26 channels of recording. Laptop hasn't missed a beat yet.

My larger setup has rack-mounted Glyph hard drives in the rack, so all I have to do is plug in my laptop to one cable and shes ready to record a session on the road. Prior to Pro-Tools allowing 3rd party interfaces I recorded using Cubase and then imported it over into Pro Tools to mix and edit. Now I can do it all in one program.

Sony Viao i7 VPCF226FM 16" Laptop. I upgraded to a 256 Gig SSD, 8 Gigs of Ram, Internal 4G (wimax) card, USB 3.0, 1394(Firewire) port and a 1080p screen.

Tracked 24 channels of audio in a recording last weekend with no issues straight into Pro Tools.

Broke it down into about 45 channels (busses and all) and a ton of plugins and mixed it on the trip back home.

Running Pro Tools 10

Check out the Lenovo Thinkpad W520 and buy a SIIG firewire express card.

I just got a Sony VAIO VPCF23BFX/B but the thing is crap. I Was intrigued with it because the laptop had an i7, 8G Ram, GT540 graphics card, 1080 screen, USB 3.0, and Firewire. I was in the market for Firewire because I to was using a 003. The Sony F series was the only laptop Frys had with firewire and they said probably one of the last going to be made. My 003 wasn't compatible for whatever reason so I sold it and just got a USB interface since that is the way the market is going anyway. Then the computer kept freaking out when I would launch PT10 and I would get a blue screen. Now I may be a little bias but I would stay away from Sony. Here is a list of Avid's qualified computers. In my opinion I wouldn't buy anything off of this list, unless you enjoy the potential of countless computer issues.

You got a bad unit. My Sony setup is still working perfectly.

Make sure you remove all of the bloat-wear off of the machine. The only thing running on my machine when I run PT is ProTools. Uninstall everything including Viao Gate.
