Duplicate the track, throw the duplicate out of phase with the original and put them both at unity.

Put an EQ on the duplicate and boost whatever "telephone" band frequencies you want to hear.

When you want it to go back to normal, simply fade out the duplicate-- leaving only the original.

With that method, you can just crossfade between the two, with no need for a polarity flip.

Not exactly. With the polarity flip, when you boost the mid band on the eq-- you will only hear the band that's being boosted. Everything else in the signal is being cancelled out. It creates a different effect than simply boosting the mids. It's also cool cause you can then automate that single band, without having to deal with additional high and low pass filters to achieve the same effect.

Look at Audio Ease's SPEAKERPHONE. It will make your track not only sound like it's coming from a radio, but you can place it in a specific room. Well worth having for any effect like this! It's also a great guitar amp emulator.

Speakerphone is a great tool.. But I don't think it's AAX yet. McDSP makes FutzBox, which is very similar. It's actually on sale for $60 right now, well worth checking out.

($60 price shown once you add it to your cart) http://audiodeluxe.com/products/mcdsp-futzbox-native-v5

Cheapest option is to find an old phone headset and wire the leads of the ear speaker to a 1/4" plug. Costs about $4. Then you could just place it next to your main vocal mic and record both.
