Greetings Allen (and Phil),

Have a question regarding RAM. Several of us noticed that having just one stick of RAM seemed to cause fewer problems on PC133 systems. Has anyone noticed a problem running TWO sticks in DDR machines?

I'm running dual sticks (256 MB X 2) of Kingston DDR 2100 in my A7V266-E Asus board with a XP 1800 and it's been flawless.

The board actually has three RAM slots, and I'll probably add more once the WIN XP version of PT LE gets released, but for now, I'd suggest no more than 512 MB total. You can definitely add more if you should so desire when / if you switch to XP after the upgrade comes out.

Best wishes, and good luck with your new system - Sorry it took so long to reply.

Thanks Phil,

Threw the new machine together the other day with the GA7DXR and AthlonXP1800+, 256meg, two WD 7200, Radeon dual head.

Ran great first time and had 200 plugins before it got tetchy.

Cheers,

Haigbabe

Haigbabe,
You're post actually answered the thing I was going to ask about. I've been perfectly fine with 256MB and wondered if others were also. Looks like the answer is yes.

We'll have to see if XP actually does require more. I don't necessarily think so...

Great results!

Allen - you're a star!

Mark

hey allen i gotta question, I'm rebuilding a few protools systems (mine and 2 friend's) with regards to cpus, i usually always buy retail because I like the 3 year warranty...(like I keep the cpu that long anyway!) and they come with a factory heatsink. I always assume that a factory heat sink is good enough for that speed cpu. Am I better off buying oem and getting an aftermarket one?

you might void the warranty by using a different hsf than the one that came with the retail package. check the documentation before you buy.

also, most resellers allow you to return oem cpus if they're DOA. check before you buy. plus, i think amd has a return policy for defective cpus - check with amd.com....

I agree with Brian. I've always bought OEM and have had one bad one that I returned for another with no problems within a 90 day period. I prefer the Volcano II for the T-bird processors or watercooling from Koolance. Less noise is the biggest reason.
Good luck.

As I mentioned before (another thread), I used to work at ABS/Nutrend/New Egg (it's all the same company) in tech support. I saw the returns we had, and since then I've just been big on warranties. It's kinda like a mechanic won't buy ceetain cars that he's worked on because he knows whats up.

Maybe I'm just paranoid. I won't buy anything with less than a 1 year warranty...you can usually find those in oem. Anyway, if you think the retail box is ok as it is, I'll just buy that.

Another question:
Is the gigabyte ga-7dx+ still the board to buy?

The GA-7DX+ is one of them. Abit KG7, and A7M266 are the other two I like. The A7V266E is working great for most also.

Well...Got my barebones Gigabyte 7DX+ / AMD 1900 system in this weekend. Plugged my video card and HD in, powered up and ....NOTHING. Looks like another week of waiting while I return this one. Oh well...

I've been reading these threads for four months now every single day untill my eyes were bugging out. I ordered the list above verbatim with the gigabye board through New Egg. They have everything but the 80mm case fan. With Microsoft, and modem it was only $875 shipped to my door. Thanks for all of the great advice on this thread. Hopefully all of this reshearch will pay off.
