External workstations,samplers,mpowered and 2496

Here's my setup I have a Ensoniq eps16+ which is basically just like an asr-10. Got my Akai S2000 on the way and currently using a m-audio 2496. Now in some scenario"s I may choose to sequence my hardware with mpower protools 6.8. Now i have my keyboard's (eps16+) outputs going into the 2496 audio inputs. When u strike a key ptools records incoming midi fine and dandy. But question is when u do it that way it gives it a kinda doubled sound when your striking the keys. Apparently cuz the audio from the keyboard is coming through. Is there a way to get your external hardware sound while physically playing to not make that sound. Is there a setting in the 2496 control panel or something. I always have mine set to "monitor mix" i think. Is it because the 2496 only has limited input/outputs. Or is that the way it goes. I can't imagine the big boys midi sequence their hardware with ptools go through that. Here's an example of what i'm talking bout.

now that i think bout it. I"m wondering if i hear that because my headphonce is connected to the 2496 outputs. But i have the headphone amp for a reason though. i can hear it louder. Help!!!
