Default Motu Firewire on Ventura

Motu says there FW only products only work up until Mojave. But just for kicks I installed it on my ventura system. I just ran the normal, latest installer exactly to specifications from MOTU and now my ultralite is working perfectly. Even the management apps are working and even the keyboard volume keys.

This isn't a production environment. But for iTunes and YouTube etc, it has been very nice. I have also used it with PT intro for some light stuff.

I should add that the system I was using was a base model i3 Mac mini from 2018 upgraded to 32 GB of RAM but I also tested it on my M1 Mac Mini and it works fine on that too, though I had to use the external power. The bus power wouldn't turn it on.

Pretty cool to get some life out of old devices.

FW was deprecated in Ventura.

Uh be careful. There is more male cow dung thrown around the interwebs about this than most things. Lots of folks have Firewire interfaces working on Ventura (with the Thunderbolt to Firewire adapter).

Since this is not a Pro Tools issue, the place to get best info is from the interface vendor or maybe their support forums. Early on multiple vendors gave incorrect info based on not knowing what Apple is going, so be careful what you are relying on and when it was said/written. Check with them now that Ventura is old and well understood…

And remember… “not supported” is not the equivalent of “won’t work”. Ran my 002r for years beyond “supported”.

Oh, absolutely. I used PT9 on Mavericks for a while. Zero issues. Unsupported usually just means untested. And sometimes supported still has issues.

Not trying to hijack this thread as this is somewhat related. Has anyone been able to get firewire to work on an Apple Silicon Mac (using a Thunderbolt to firewire adapter)? Given this conversation about unsupported vs. not working, it seemed like a good place to ask. I have an older MOTU828MkIII and a Focusrite Liquid Sapphire sitting around that worked great back in the day. I tried to trade it in at Guitar Center and they won't even consider anything with firewire anymore (company policy).
