Guitar tone in pro tools

I am using a gibson Les paul into a tube screamer into a marshall jcm 900 head into randall bottom to a shure sm 57 into a neve 1272 pre into pro tools. The guitar is a bit thin. Does anyone have any suggestions on compressors, pre's, mics that would lend to a warmer more meaty guitar tone. I am looking to get any tone recorded that is similar to the heavy guitar of fear factory, pantera, black sabbath, COC, disturbed, mudvayne etc.

Any suggestions appreciated,

The Fatso by Impirical Labs, I want to get one someday soon.. Gtrs, the last hurdle for me in Pro Tools.

Gtrs? - hmmmm? Need a FATSO !!!!!

yeah a FATSO or even tape, either of those should really do the trick. also try putting a wood board in front of the speaker about 2-3 feet diagnally and micing the board, i've found that tecnique to be more true to what you hear in the room.

Jules, I had a Fatso Jr. in my possession for about three hours last sat...This machine totally rocks! Junk acoustic into an M149 into a bush pre into the Fatso....VERY SWEET! Since then, the Flamingo has landed over here. I cant wait to hear that combo! Hopefully this weekend. Also had success on a few Fatso enhanced bass tracks!!! I will be getting a Fatso very soon!

I bet the Fatso would mulch at the end of a Les Paul / Marshall set up! I play a Les Paul too...I'm a huge fan of the Tube Screamer! Can't wait to try this.

Also, Jules, I'm looking forward to your thoughts on the Hedd as the master clock compared to brands X,Y and Z....Thanks in advance...FLUSH

A few thoughts...

To much distortion going in tends to make guitars sound thinner, so trying to get real fat in one pass with tons of dirt may not work so well.

Most of the thick, fat guitars in today’s nu-metal have the same part tracked three or four times each. The slight variations in the performances create the thickness.

For a faster path to hugeness - You can also use an amp plug-in. Copy the main track several times giving each track a different setting. Also try nudging some of the copied tracks a few mil. secs. to fatten things up.

I'd suggest not using a pedal and going for a better amp. JCM2000 are much thinker, and for some severe screaming bite and metal go for Mesa Boogie Rectifiers.

Hey Music,
You've mentioned people who have differing gtr sounds. I think you're on the right track with the recording gear, however, depending on what style you play, I'm not so sure about the Marshall TS9 combo. The guys you mentioned have a very tight, punchy gtr tone and the TS9 smooths it out for me. I agree with Corey in that some of these guys use fast response amps and use the gain from the head. Pantera uses solid state Randalls. I don't agree about the room mic for that style, but blending multiple amps might help. I also agree with Jules that Heavy distorted gtr is difficult with PT. Also, you might try a pickup with a little more drive to the amp. Most of the guys you mentioned don't use stock les paul pickups, which are a little cleaner than say an EMG.
