Default Updating from PT 12.0 to 12.4

I already have PT12 installed and want to update it to 12.4.

In the past all that was needed was an update patch. All I find now that's available is a full install of PT12.4. It seems odd for a full over-write of the older program. Will it delete anything: plugins, settings, etc. It seems like starting from scratch again.

Am I misunderstanding something or is there a simple update patch somewhere.

Pro Tools updates are full installers. There are no patches. It is recommended that you uninstall the older version, especially on a PC. If on MAC I believe you can just install the new version and it will remove the old.

Do you know if I would I be starting from scratch, needing to reinstalling Air instruments, plugins. Possibly losing data and settings. It took over a month to work out all the problems I had from my last install.

I'm on Windows 8 and need to upgrade to unsupported Windows 10. Thinking I'll have better luck if I'm as current as possible to PT 12.4.

Thanks

The 3 most important thing to remember when ever doing any software or OS update or installing a new version of anything including integrating new HW is always……
1 Back up
2 back up
3 back up

At least that way if you have any problems you still have everything saved in a worst case scenario…..
Actually it a pretty good idea to have 3 back copies of your files at all times anyway.

Good luck with the upgrade.
Doing your homework here before doing the update…..will save you a lot of time and misery.

Pretty sure the combined shared experience of the users here is better than you will get from Avid.

My recommendation is also to backup. I used to use Acronis, but now can't recommend Macrium Reflect enough. There's a free version.

Make an image before you upgrade to 12.4 so you can go back to your previous install if something goes wrong or there's something you don't like.

Make an image before you go to Windows 10. And don't go to Windows 10 until you absolutely have to and do a clean install of Windows 10, not an upgrade-in-place.

Cheers,

At the OP 3 questions you might want to ask yourself?

A) Is your current version of PT12.0 working perfectly?

B) If so does PT 12.4 offer features and workflow advantages that you actually need or will use?

3) If so is updating worth risking any trouble or aggravation you might experience that others users here are reporting?

I have learned the hard way updating just for the sake of running whats new can often be very problematic.
Sometimes it not a bad idea to be running a slightly older and proven version of software or an OS until the general consensus among most users is that all/most of the bugs in the new version you are considering installing is now running stable and trouble free.
If not be patient and wait until it is.

I know from experience nothing more frustrating than taking a perfectly stable system and upgrading to something new that crashes or has glitches & bugs.

As always YMMV.
Good luck

Thanks for your responses guys. Your right I'm happy with PT 12.0, the only reason I'd have to upgrade is I'm not sure how installing the newer PT 12.4 will be on Windows 10 later. Wanted to install before I made the switch to W10 OS.

But an even more concern is My PT10 with Windows 10, lol. Hard to find any solid info about that.

I don't understand Pro Tools sometimes I've been a user scince the 90's. I and a lot of people run other software that needs to run on the new Win10 OS we have no choice. It kind of discourages new users to buy Pro Tools when they lag behind.

Thanks again

as to your PT 10 sessions
Look here
http://avid.force.com/pkb/articles/e...m-Requirements

Scroll down to windows Supported OS & click on the compatibility grid.

Appears a PT10 & 12 co-install is supported with windows 7 only.

A lot of us are in the same boat.
If I want to run a co-install of PT 10.3.10 & PT 12
I am locked in to running OSX 10.8.5 which was released in July of 2012. The newest Apple OSX is 10.11.3 so I am 3 OS versions and almost 4 behind what is current.

The way some folks here work around this is by running multiple hard drives. Each dedicated to a different version of PT running on the supported OS for that particular version of PT

Hope this was a little helpful.

Thanks, Trainwreckmusic

PT12 and PT10 together compatible only Win 7
But I been able to run them both on Win 8 without too many problems.
But both on Win 10 is a bit of the unknown.

I wish I could find some other posts of what others have experienced going that route.

I'll also look into compartmentalizing my computer into separate hard drives.

When you uninstall 12, you will be prompted with a choice of what to uninstall.
1.) ProTools Only
2.) PT and HD driver
3.) PT, HD driver, preferences, databases...

Make sure you choose ProTools only.

When you install version 12.4, all of your plugins will be there as well as your settings (If you didn't choose the option to delete preferences during the uninstall)

Like others have stated, making a backup is a smart move. Windows 10 is still unsupported at this point and while it's been smooth sailing for some, others have had issues.
