Do the mentioned hot swap systems also handle sd drives?

Not by themselves, but maybe with an adapter(most are designed for 3.5" drives). My desktop drive cage can handle either, but I've never tried running the C: drive from there(but with an eSATA connection, it should work).

Are people still using triple channel ram or are we beyond that now in these builds?

To be more specific Sandy Bridge E uses quad channel memory, that's socket LGA 2011.

What would be a great MB to go with Sandy?

ASUS Sabertooth X79? Would the fire wire on this unit be compatible with audio needs?

Use RAM that is appropriate for your motherboard. Socket 1366 ran triple-channel, so 3 matching sticks(or 6 ir you have 6 slots). Socket 2011 runs quad-channel, so that should get 4 or 8 matching sticks. Anything other than those......sorry, but AFAIC, there is nothing but those 2 for Pro Tools

This is a nice thread for new builders. Thanks. You have all been very helpful.

Another question that comes up in this situation is, what firewire chip set and in what boards can you get it? If not that route then a decent tried and true 3rd party add on and which one is optimal?
