Default What is your DAW Backup solution?

Ok...so I've been on ProTools since 2001.

And in my computer room, I'm amassing hundreds and hundreds
of backup CD-R's and DVD's.

And I'm saying...it's 2008...there's gotta be a better way!!

What are you folks using to archive your PT sessions?

It would be nice to find something that is also searchable/accessible.

(...unlike my CD-R's...Now where's that session from February 2003???)

Thanks for your input!

I have a few large portable USB drives that I use when the session is over. I generally write to them at the end of a session as well as a long night of mixing. I have 2 servers upstairs that I plan on putting either Windows Server 2008 onto, or Suns ZFS to allocate the data and do nightly incrementals. Kinda cool.

The portable drives are nice though as you just shelf them unless you need to do recalls. That way you do not have to worry about them always running, etc. Backup, remove, add a new drive and move on.

Norton Ghost and a few portable USB drives I put together - one for each internal drive (system, projects and sample library). Quick and simple.

Thanks for the tips.

I will seek out Norton Ghost as well as start looking into USB drives.

Any particularly recommended models?

Thanks again...

I use the MyBook drives for backup. Worked well for the past 4 years.

The consensus here is Acronis True Image Home is a better choice than Norton Ghost, but either will do the job.

Cheers,

CASPER XP for me for cloning entire hdd's or makin' redundant bkups of specific partitions across dedicated hdd's. i take incremental bkups after sessions which take no time. i have to admit i haven't gotten into the image thing in ACRONIS. but that's just me. i prefer to have a clone of a hdd or partition rather than buildin' from a full bkup image and then addin' incremental images to get where i'm tryin' to get. again, that's just my preference tho and there are choices to satisfy all

Why is that mykhal? What's the difference between cloning and incremental back ups?

what's up filo!! with CASPER XP when you take an incremental bkup involvin' the same 2 partitions, where previously 'partiton A' was cloned as 'partiton B', then when that next bkup is done involvin' the same 2 partitons, it will only copy the changes that occurred on 'partiton A' since the last bkup and copy those to 'partiton B'. so what you end up with is 'still' a current/updated cloned copy of 'partition A' not a proprietary incremental image that has to be added to your original full bkup, but proprietary image of 'partition A' where these 2 would have to be combined to bring you to the current state of your 'partition A' by restoring with a program like ACRONIS.

so in essence, if my 'partition A' takes a hit where my sessions are, then i'm up and runnin' immediately on partition B' by just pointing to that partition when openin' my session in PTLE. the only thing i have to do is make sure all links look right in disk allocation for the session and i'm good

but i do get where ACRONIS has its' advantages if one is doin' staged updates/installs and one wants to be able to restore back to a particular stage durin' that process. that's a nice flexibility to have too.

anyway, hope i was clear enough.
