In general though, lots of RAM is a good way to (somewhat) future-proof your rig. It can help out in certain apps too, like video edit pgms or opening a million browser tabs etc. If you're planning to spend 4-5K on a laptop, you might as well get more RAM.

Many VI developers put a preload option in their settings/preferences windows which allows you to decide how much goes to ram and how much is streamed. The defaults may or may not be the right balance, so it's always a good idea to check into these things and customize where necessary.

I'm not sure about video, though I've had files that are a many GB in size and I didn't get the impression that they were being tossed entirely into ram. My guess is that PT streams video.

This stuff is only good when support comes and it's gonna be a buggy ride for a year or two.

Personally I'd wait for it to become established a bit more before I relied heavily on it day in, day out.

Yes of course there's going to be plenty who feel it runs fine for them but when we look at the current mac pro, it's still intel and intentionally so to ensure compatibility for professionals who rely on this stuff to just work.

Yes the MacPro will have the ARM chips eventually but just hold tight, try not to get too excited and eventually it will be smooth sailing for everyone.

Anyone who bought that 2019 Mac Pro has budgeted at least three years of using it, so it is pretty much a given it will be the last model to get Apple Silicon.

I just wonder, after Apple gets these new laptop deliveries going, how long it will take to get "M2" mini. With that said I am willing to eat my hat if I am wrong, but my best guess is we do not even hear rumors of ARM Pro in 2022.

A m1x pro mini will be a great studio machine. I think that's when I will switch from my 7.1. I've only had the 71 for 1 year.

I ordered a 16 m1x max 64ram 4tb ssd. I will try it with an hdx chassis once it's compatible.

I hope you like the taste of hats then.

They said it would be a 2 year transition. We’re 1 year in and every Mac aside from the larger iMac is now Apple Silicon equipped.

The MacPro powered by Apple Silicon will definitely be out by this time next year. No doubt about it.

Yeah. Apple Silicon has thermal constraints and will be a challenge to put into a desktop chassis. Good comparison. LOL!

Nobody knows for sure, but here's something for an educated guess:

• Previous transition took from 10.4 to 10.6 to drop PPC
• Apple generally speaking supports old hardware for three years

So if we have luck, Big Sur and Monterey are the macOS that have Rosetta, and The Next Place introduced next year may drop Intel support altogether.

... and given it took 3-4 years to get the Mac Pro right last time, they may want to wait at least until macOS is Apple Silicon only to release "ARM Pro" workstation.

Just guessing though.
