Default Best general purpose plug-ins?

Hi,

Im looking to finally start buying some plugs and step away from the stock plugs a little.

Im looking for some good general purpose suggestions that will not require me to sell a kidney to buy!!
Specifically looking at multiband compression and a good flexible reverb (dverb is just not doing it)

Thanks,
Luke K

for compression I like Massey CT4

Lately I've been using WaveArts Trackplug 5 on almost every track in my mixes whenever I need flexible EQ and Comp options.

For reverb I honestly like the AIR reverb (PT 8 stock) my current favorite for drums.

I also use TL Space a lot and Bootsy EpicVerb sometimes.

I know you said MULTI-Band compression, but I haven't found one that I liked. The WaveArts one seriously messes with the phase at each of the crossover points so I haven't found a use for it yet.
So my vote would go to Ozone 4.

If it's recorded right you won't need a multiband compressor on a track, usually just in mastering.

Hey Luke,

The only software reverb I really like so far (except the various spring emulations out there) is the much underrated VirSyn Reflect. It's a hybrid of an IR-based and an algorithmic reverb. Aside from that I'd second giving the AIR one a go actually.

I'm not a fan of multiband compression in general so I don't know if I can be of much help there. I know that McDSP is running a special right now where you can buy individual plug-ins, including their MC2000, so you might want to demo it if it's in your price range.

May I suggest an alternative approach? If you have the dough, check out Dynamic Spectrum Mapper. IMO more useful than a multiband compressor, but to each their own. Might have a "sell-kidney" price tag though, depending on how much your kidneys are worth.

Sonalksis has currently a promotion running where their (zero latency) Multiband Compressor goes out for EUR 79,- / around USD 100. No iLok neccessary.
