Core 12 vs 8 core Xeon
Hi Guys , I have just start a lo budget film score. which will be the first since PT9.. most of my work on PT9 has been Alt Rock/pop.. tracking/mixing some Vls for Drums and the odd synth etc.. but this is a score so massive GBs of structre Lib and lots of tracks with almost no Audio Tracks.. I do find that PT9 will Quite or Crash More with Large Vls Sessions, I have not updated my Mac Pro for about 3 years or more.. I have the first 3Gz 8 Core.. I was looking a the new 12 core and wonder if that would help my problems.. its a lots a money and don;t really what to buy it just for a small speed bump..
or is it a massive speed bump? any upgrade this way? Cheers Andy |

Re: Core 12 vs 8 core Xeon
Whilst you are waiting, why don't just bounce down some of the VI's to audio tracks.....
Seems like an easy way to save resources. you don't really need to have x number of instances off Structure or any VI open for the length of the film track do you? Just curious.

Good Point, thats how I work most of the time.. I really like getting midi into Audio must better.. but when you are writing to picture and using the seem Session and changing then for different parts in the score you can't really do that.. also you may have changes etc.. i will be printing everything for the 5.1 mixing!

Re: Core 12 vs 8 core Xeon
Your 2008 8-core Harpertown is still one of the fastest Mac Pros out there. The 6-core 3.33 GHz might work a little bit better with VIs, but the peak performance will probably not be any better at all. The current top model, the 2.95 GHz 12-core might be a bit faster overall too, but not much. Would this justify the expense? I'm not sure.

Re: Core 12 vs 8 core Xeon
I have the same 8 core.. and it smokes! I have run into the RAM limit in PT a couple of times so I just printed the VI's and went on about my business.
An alternative would be to use some other prog such as VE pro to launch your VI's in leaving the Ram in PT free.. you would just rewire them in through Aux tracks I believe... I haven't messed with that but maybe Key or one of the fellows using VE pro can chime in? I'm kind of curious myself. Peace!
