Default HD Native card is whining

Hello all-

Just sat down to determine what component was making a 15K + whine within our DAW (similar to some really old CRTs, for us within the older community). Thought it might be a fan or a hard drive.

It's the HD Native card

We use four Digidesign 192 i/o's (blues) each maxxed with analog output cards.

It only is heard when running PT - exit PT and the whining stops.

I've visually checked the card & traces - looks great. Reseated, restarted, and tested again....... still there.

Anyone else notice this?

I don't think the HD Native card has a fan... What part on it do you think is whining?

Card has a heat sync and no fan. Be interested to know what is generating the 15k

Doubt it's the card. Remember that computer power supplies use switching power supplies and the frequency and level of generated noise of those depends on load to a certain extent. Good ones don't produce any noticeable whine but cheap ones will.

I do think I'll need to swap power supplies to test this configuration any further. I came to a similar thought that *maybe* when the HD Native card is engaged by the session (and "syncs" up to the 192 i/o's) it places an additional load on the power supply ...... and that's actually what I'm hearing.

My power supply is a quality item, but everything dies someday...

It just hit me - any reason you're posting about a Windoze machine in the Mac sub-forum?

Just figured I'd reach-out to all HD Native card users. Nothing more - nothing less.

I think mine is whining as well, as soon as i start pro tools and its fully loaded the whining starts.
Does this apply to your experience aswell?

Mine not only whines...it pules, stomps it's feet, and recently held it's breath until it turned blue.
Sorry, couldn't resist.

Sorry, couldn't resist.
I often suffer from the same compulsive behaviour
