Default need to upgrade to a G5 but have PT HD3 PCI

Hi,

I am at the point where I need to upgrade my Mac in order to run PT 7.2. I am currently running an HD3 (PCI) on a G4 800. I want to go to the top Mac that will support the old PCI Cards. Obviously the MacPro is all PCIe and will not work. According to the compatibility sheets the G5 Dual 2.7 is the max box, but when I looked at all the specs it said that all these units are PCIExpress. What do you guys recommnd, other than paying 5K to trade in for an HD3 ACCELL PCIe.

Please advise

You will need a G5 with PCI-X slots... at the "second generation" they came in dual 2.0, 2.3 and 2.5... The 2.3 and 2.5 run hot so they have a proprietary "liquid cooling" system... also, these models cannot be run on their side... I have the 2.0 dual... works great... avoid the 1.8 ghz model, there were compatibility issues... check ebay! Hope this helps...

G5 Dual 2.7 has PCI slots, that's what I'm running

Check out different refurb vendors,

I'm using this machine with a HD-3 with no problem...remember to factor in an extra $1000 or so for good RAM and another drive.

I think $450 is enough, you can get a 2GB kit for $250, add an SATA drive for $200 and you're good to go

You could use an expansion chassis:

The following must be purchased separately from your Digidesign dealer:

* Digidesign Host PCI or Host PCIe Card: Dedicated card that is installed in the host computer and provides the connection to the chassis.

This way you can use pci cards on a PCIe-Mac.

I suppose that the chassis will be compatible with the Pro Mac, but you have to check with Digi about that.

Cheers, Niels

i get occasional crashes but none have sabotaged the session 10.4.7 with pt7.1cs9

Dutchmuzik . I ordered a G5 dual 2.7 from the Apple Store yesterday to run HD2 with PCI . Now , I just found this compatibility warning from Digi . Are you having any of these type of problems ? Hope not . Thanks , Rich

"Compatibility Alert — Power Mac G5 2.3/2.7GHz Models
Digidesign has identified an intermittent problem with Pro Tools|HD and the following Power Mac G5 2.3GHz and 2.7GHz models (introduced April 27, 2005). At times in a small number of these systems, not all of the cards in a Pro Tools|HD or Pro Tools|HD Accel system are seen by the Mac in Apple System Profiler or DigiTest. During launch, Pro Tools shows "DAE error -1123" or "Flex Cable Error".

This is because the configuration is seen as an extra TDM flex cable attached to the last recognized card, but not connected to the subsequent card. This problem can usually be resolved by restarting the computer. In rare occasions, multiple restarts may be required. If restarting fails to solve the issue described, please contact Digidesign Technical Support for additional troubleshooting and diagnosis.
