Default Good first vox mike for $300 street price?

Just looking for some suggestions. New to recording and all I have right now is a Sure SM-57 to record my guitars and bass. I listen to mostly metal with both clean vocals male and female to low death growls.

Thanks!

Assuming you want a loarge diaphragm condenser, here's a few goodies:

Studio Projects B1 $80
Studio Projects C1 $200
Rode NT1-a $200
Rode NTK $400

I've owned (and liked) all but the B1, have read nothing but good about it.

also, if your into metal, a vocal mic alternative may be the legendary SM58(maybe just by the grill and cloth attachment for the 57, if im not mistaken they are otherwise the same microphone)

if your on a somewhat tight budget you may look into:
behringer b1
MXL series

a MXL 2001 would deffinalty be good and its 155 bucks and comes with a MXL 603s
or check out the MXL Mogami Edition mic i hear its really nice thats 300 bucks

I have heard been told some amazing reviews from some very veteran engineer pals of mine about the MXL mics. I'd give them a try.

Ive got an MXL V67g (99$) and it really sounds pretty good. Its very clean and not harsh at all. Has a nice touch of "color" and sits well in the mix for my vocals needing very little eq.

Ive heard great things about teh MXL V69 its basically like the V67g but with a tube you can get them for under 300 w/ power supply, shockmount and case. Ive heard some great recordings with them and I even heard that MXL was surprised that it came out so good, they werent planning on having sound as good as it does.

I am thinking about getting a CAD VSM, they are a little over 300 and sound like a great mic, Id like to use one first though.

I've tested the following:
B1,B3,C1,C3 & TB1 v.s. C2000 & 414 (Both AKG)
The C1 or C3 (dual-capsule).
For their price they give very good result and like the MXL being manufactured in 727Audio (or like that) in Beijing.

Like I said in the MAC forum, the best mic in this range for warm vocals is the Rode NT 1000, unless you can get a great deal on an Rode NTK on Ebay. The Ci is way to bright, unless that is what you are looking for. It certainly doesn't sound like the U87 like Studio Projects believes. If they honestly believe that, they are in the wrong business.

Thanks for the replies guys...my head is spinning. Apparently there are some nice vocal mics for well under the $300 price range.

I would say the Rode NT2. It is my go to mic for vocals. I tried a lot of mics but that was the best for male vocals. I had the opportunity to demo about 15 different mics from GC. About 5 at a time. It was a great way to AB mics. That NT2 is really good.
