Default automating plugins

I'm still not getting it very well. If lets say I just want a huge reverb to hit on just one snare and then return to normal is that something that can pop it instantely and then pop out, or is it really somthing more like a audio suite that has to be planned to come in and out. another words it doesn't really happen in real time. Anyway I realize im not understanding it well can somone run me through the step by step process Thanks

The way I would recommend doing it is making a bus send from the track in question, returning it on an aux input track with the reverb plug (set at 100% wet) on the aux track, and then automating the send mute. This will give you verb on exactly what you want without cutting the reverb trail short or changing the sound of the original track.

Either that or just add to one snare.
Just play with a test track, set up the automated parts to a plugin and hit auto touch on your fader.
Play the track and mess around with the parameters, play it back, watch things move and see the automation in the edit window.
Forget the instructions and rules, you will get the hang of this in notime at all.

Hold Command(apple)/Option/Control and click on any Plugin item...You will see the pop up window giving you "automation" choises.

Then in edit window, expand view to "medium" and click on "waveform" and scroll to bottom of pop up and there is the automation for you to manipulate to your desired result.

When finished hold command/control and click on the track name to return edit view to waveform.
