Default File Conversion

Hello,
Someone sent me audio files to work with (WAV). I couldn't import, because PT says,"File not useable by PT". The only thing I could manage was convert these files to mp4 in iTunes, then import them into my session. Then, I discovered the files were 16 bit /48k instead of 24 bit/48k and played back at 1/2 speed. I tried "Save Copy IN" at the appropriate sample and bit rate, but there was no change.
Does anyone know how I might be able to get these files converted?

Thanks,
Chas
