Default potential mac convert

Greetings. If anyone has more or less equal knowledge of Mac and PC, I'd appreciate your opinion on this. I had been running PT 5.3.2 on Windows XP, and everything was hunky dory until I updated to 6.4 and installed the cs updates.

Feel free to read my rant:

here

Anyway, the kicker was when I got this "DIOTHUNK" message which shut down my computer and made it unable to open Windows at all. Did a clean re-install of Windows, restored all my saved data (my sessions were on a 2nd disk), re-installed, and the same thing happened again.

Long story short, I now have access to a Mac G4 with both OS9 and OSX on it. My understanding from a good bit of searching Digi is that I can run PT 5.3.2 on OS9. SO>>> I'm about to move my entire PT operation over to the Mac, run 5.3.2, and forget 6.4 altogether under the law of "if it ain't broke, don't fix it".

If I come over to your religion, will somebody baptise me?

-Brain

you should at least try it, and try both platforms too. not all plugin developers release os9 versions anymore, so even if the performance is a bit worse on the osx side, the plus side is huge too

To fix your diothunk issue.. follow my instructions in this thread

That problem was caused by incompletely uninstalling Pro Tools or installing incompatible components.

Thanks, Rail. But here is perhaps a dumb question: Why would Digi include these files in PT which cause trouble, and obviously are not necessary if they can be deleted with no ill effects? Why not eliminate them with one of the updates?

Sorry Mac Folks; I'll get off here now.

Huh.. they're included because they are needed.. but if you uninstall a newer version and install an older version.. or install the wrong ASIO or WaveDriver over the wrong Pro Tools version.. then you'll end up with incompatible drivers.. which is what happens when you get that DIOTHUNK error.

A properly configured PT system on XP will run great, I have not had any problems, though I mostly run 6.4 on OS X Panther.
I would still recommened that you check out the Mac just since they are so much simpler, but don't switch just because of reliability.
