New Setup - Need Advice !
Hey dudes. I'm upgrading my recording at home from a Delta 1010LT + Cubase to a pro tools system. It will be used for recording my band, mostly in a home studio but also out at gigs when required. We're planning on recording bass, guitar and drums live and adding vocals and overdubs later.
Originally, I was planning on getting an interface, monitors and an ADAT 8 channel mic Pre like the Digimax LT, but after talking about it I think I can make do with 8 channels at once instead of 12, and would prefer to have better quality pres. I've heard bad things about the quality of those multichannel ADAT pre's for under $1000 US when compared to more expensive 2 channel analog units. Heres the setup I am considering at the moment, and what I'm upgrading from.. 1. Interface: Digi002r (going from Mackie CFX 16 mixer into a M-Audio Delta 1010LT) 2. Monitors: Dynaudio BM5a (going from $50 PC speakers) 3. Preamps: 1x FMR RNP and 1x Presonus MP20, 4 built in 002r pre's. (coming from pre's on the CFX 16 mixing desk) 4. Software: Pro Tools LE 6.9 (coming from a dodgy copy of Cubase) This upgrade is going to cost me about $3000 US after shipping. Will this setup be a noticeable improvement in quality over what I was using before ? For that kind of money, is there anything I should consider as alternative parts? I'm not able to go and listen to the various components before I buy them, so am heavily reliant on peoples feedback on the net. In case theres anything else that needs upgrading, heres what I currently own. Please bear in mind that I am (slightly over) my already strained budget, so any further expenses needs to be offest with a cost decrease somewhere else: Tascam 2488 portable multitrack recorder 1 Rode NT1000 2x Shure Beta 56's 2x Rode NT5 (matched pair) 1 Shure Beta 57 1 Shure SM 58 1 Shure Beta 52 Can borrow SM 57's whenever. Musicman Stingray Bass SWR Mo'Bass Head + Eden 210XST Bass cab Fender American Tele Fender Hot Rod Deluxe all tube amp Roland XV3080 Synth module Roland RD170 Digital Piano / 88 Note Midi controller E-Magic AMT8 Midi USB controller Aphex Aural Exciter, rackmount 2 channel Various plugins + softsynths, cables, etc.. Thanks a lot guys, any help you can give me would be much appreciated. |

Re: New Setup - Need Advice !
id start off with just the 002rack,the monitors and build from there. work with it for a little while, then start upgrading. i never like to get to much at once. id hold off on the pres for a little bit and do some more research.

Re: New Setup - Need Advice !
Only problems with that are:
1. Increases shipping costs 2. I'm doing this upgrade so we can record the band live and start working on the songs. With only 4 tracks available at one time, we're not going to be able to do that. I know what you mean about getting everything all at once, but really that isn't an option. |

Re: New Setup - Need Advice !
4 mic tracks available you mean.
kick snare, overheads direct guitar and bass and keys overdub miced guitars later. OR if you have a mixer or someone else in your band does [you probably do on your PA system] run the inserts as sends for the other 4 tracks |
