Default Is the Avalon M5 worth it?

I have been into the home recording thing for about 2 years now. A freind and I are building a small studio mainly for personal use and for a few very talented solo musicians who live here without much cash. I want to purchase a very clean and clear single channel pre for mainly vocals and acoustic. I do not have the luxury of trying anything out as the doctors live on the hill and the rest of us live in the valley, if you know what I mean. Anyhow, I want to know what your opinions are and of other pre's as well.
Thanks!

Oh yeah, I love VU meters man!

Of course it is - the SPL is upper middleclass and nothing more. although you get a decent performance for the money spent, these units simply are not high end!!!

try maybe the vt 737 sp as well. great on vocals and bass. check out www.avalondesign.com for a comparison of the two.

if you want that high end sound, go get high end gear. I used an SPL goldmike before getting my vt 737 sp, it's just another league.

Thanks for the responses! I have been reading around and it really does seem like it is the ticket for me. Plus it looks well built.....always a plus. I sure wish I could hear it first, but as I stated...no such conveneince for me
Thanks again for the input.

Places like Mercenary, Atlas Pro and Sweetwater allow you to be satisfied with a purchase which is just as good.

After going for the single channel for a few purchases I recommend going for a good stereo pre like the Great River MP2NV.

If not, I'm sure you'll be happy with the M5.

I second that. You could also check out the Grace stuff (super clean) or if you're really looking for the best, get an API. I have two u5's and I'm gonna sell them. They're nice, but I guess the Avalon gear is kinda falling out of favor with me.
