This would probably also affect anyone else whose royalties are based on the artist's royalty rate, for example producers or mixers who are getting points.

People seem to forget that the RIAA is just the lobbying arm of the record companies.

And, no, we don't need them anymore.

While artist and producer's royalties are probably *not* far behnd, the title of the article is misleading. The RIAA is lobbying for the mechanical rate to be reduced. Currently it rises about 10% every year (someone could go to the Harry Fox site and double check this), and since the labels have less and less control on publishing they are having a hard time negotiating with the copyright holders to lower the rate paid per album. So now that the copyright holders (composers and publishers) have access to other forms of revenue, i.e., ringtones, the labels are crying poverty to make sure that no one in the industry generates more revenue than them. They are finally learning the age old lesson that the SONG is what is important, NOT THEM! and they don't like it.

Its always been about content! So it's always been about the song.

people at a party rarely say " hey let's listen to keyboard patches"

Multi-Millionares in the music biz all have the same creed "Content is King!"
